Yes, I Know Who I Am

The Feist: 1 2 3 4

1, 2, 3, 4
Tell me that you love me more
Sleepless, long nights
That is what my youth was for

Oh, teenage hopes
Arrive at your door
Left you with nothing,
But they want some more

Chorus:
Oh, oh, oh,
You're changing your heart
Oh, oh, oh,
You know who you are

Sweetheart, bitter heart,
Now I can't tell you apart
Cozy and cold,
Put the horse before the cart

Those teenage hopes,
Who have tears in their eyes
Too scared to own up,
To one little lie

Chorus

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10,
Money can't buy you back the love that you had then
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10
Money can't buy you back the love that you had then

Chorus x 4

For the teenage boys
They're breaking your heart
For the Teenage boys
They're breaking your heart

I know who I am. I am one of two who has changed heart. I am one of two who has drifted apart. From the bottom of my heart, I'm sorry. But I think I'm ready. I'm ready for the future, for the possibilities, for living life! This is it. I know what I want. I know what I feel. Let's just wait for time.

Tamat Riwayat

Worn, seasoned jeans is the most comfortable thing in the world after a grandmother's warm embrace and reassuring words. It is a safe choice, it is true and it is follows through, in spite of your most torrential weight fluctuations or worst pimple outbreaks.

How can I not remember the first time I laid eyes on you? It was 2006, at One Utama that I went for jeans hunting with Papa. You gave me the fluttery, butterfly-in-the-tummy sensations people get when they meet something they really desire, and something they knew would be the best thing that could happen to them. It was a fit! All I needed to do was get your length altered at Uptown and an inspiring love affair began soon after.

You saw me through my best days. You saw me through my worst bad-hair days. You saw me through my saddest moments or loudest experiences. You served me selflessly through my stint in conservative INTEC by accompanying me on my countless dates with S, on my 24/7 Calculus-studying at Starbucks with K, on my pasar-malam trips with the six-pack. You were always my choice for movie trips and open houses with KYS buddies. I am sure you will not forget carrying Yaya nor her spits and her pen scribblings on you. Ayell never really got to know you, but I'm sure you'll never forget how tiny he was when he was born.

Most importantly, I am glad that you have gotten to see your fair share of this Land of the Free called America. We both have seen much and experienced aplenty here. I'm sure you love Chicago and New York City as much as I do, and I still feel pangs of remorse that I did not take you with me to San Francisco and the roadtrip I went on last year.

Albeit I may have shortchanged you many times for that $3.99 jeans I purchased at Charlotte Ruse, or that unbelievably cheap, genuine Roxy jeans from Bandung, or your two Levi's half-sisters, skinny jeans black and gray, or my new penchant for leggings; you should know that you were my true love. There is only so much skinny jeans can do by looking great with boots, but you gave me faith in myself by looking so great on me always. I thank you endlessly for that.

Now that time has taken its toll and the many number of washes have eaten you up as they see fit, I guess it is time I accept that we bid farewell. I do not have the heart to physically throw you out--like I did to your older, bootleg-cut of a stepsister--but I'll be seeing you less and less. May we meet again at place where all jeans, things, friendships and relationships go untainted, unspoilt and forever ready to make someone happy.

When you are sorrowful, look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight. ~Kahlil Gibran

p/s: If this is just about a pair of jeans, why do I feel so empty?

Sound Advice (pun intended)

Take a step back and be mute once in a while because you'd be surprised at the beautiful sounds you hear with your heart.

My Mom, Not Yours

Some things we cannot escape from. One that's catching up with me is the recognition of a big part of you in myself. The way we beat around the bush, our talkative ways, our overwhelmingly rapid speech and our kalut traits; we are more alike than I have ever realized. It took me about 19 years to see that I am this extrovert girl, speaking more than I should (though not all the time a good idea), because of you Ma.

Despite the shortcomings it may bring, I am still proud to have been bred as assertive as I am now. There are so many things I could never have done and accomplished had I not been able to speak and write as I do now. The books you taught me to read and love, the places in old Kuala Lumpur you made me see, the independence you gave me to roam about with public transportation (long before anybody else's parents gave in); for all those I thank you for.

Your penchant for winning competitions and knack for writing stellar slogans amaze me like no other. I am truly happy that you are getting back in the game of speaking out to the public and writing letters that matter, and will support you in any way that I can. Though I grumble at your requests for Obama newspapers/memorabilia, there's a huge part of me that admires your worldly concerns and the fact that you are not like anybody's mother.

Abang, Kaklong and I may have had our fair share of emotional fights and tongue lashes with you, (and God will burn us in hell for that); but I do want to assure you that we never once truly, really, deeply meant all the words we've uttered. Abang throws his tantrums because he cares, Kaklong and I sometimes take a step back because we are void, empty children. We tease because we are playing with this game called "ego and love", yet we get frustrated because we just want you to move on and be happy. We may cringe at your actions, but we are just concerned. It may have been the circumstances we live in that make you you, and us, your children, us; but we are still family and we love you despite all the showdowns the family has seen.

It may sound very disturbing to some that we are never a family of I love you-s. "Take care"-s, "Keep safe"-s and embarrassed "Love, Nj"-s or "Love, Ma"-s in greeting cards are the closest we'll get to uttering those three words. And this is the closest to an I love you I will ever say, Ma. Because my mom, she's just not yours (yes, yours, readers), and that makes her special.

Happy birthday, Ma.

Lest You Be Fooled

Don't be fooled

1. One day I wake up smiling,
the other I arouse scowling.
Should I feel guilty;
should I say nay;
should I stay away?
But beaming so hard,
and beating so fast,
thy heart feels.
Something.
Oh yes it feels.

2. So I have a dream.
A dream that goes far
beyond the horizon
beyond the continents
beyond the seas.
Can't you see and smile for me?
Will you notice and smile with me?

3. Despicable are my actions,
ugly are my thoughts
void are my promises.
But can you blame
a heart so weak, a life so broken
a hole so empty?

. . . into thinking that this is poetry or lyrical thoughts of any sort. It's a shameful jumble of thoughts hiding behind a guise so decent that you could be fooled. I have attempted (and failed) myriads of times at writing verse and have resigned to the fact that I can't write poetry for peanuts!

Yes, laugh and be merry,
oh this poem sucks don't worry! ; )

Let Me PMS (in rojak again)

After a hard day's work, I wonder, is this all worth it? The time I've put in, the effort I've poured, the dedication I've demonstrated, are they justified? How would you feel if you've made yourself bibik for almost a year now, and the same vicious cycle go on and on? Mulut berbulu cakap, plan ni plan tu, but at the end of the day, semua kelam kabut. You guys (yes, I refuse to say we) are A-excellent at planning this and that, but at the end of the day, you don't follow through. Execution satu haprak tak ikut what you guys have promised to do. In the end, it's the same faces yang have to jadi kuli batak run around do almost everything.

Hm, to be fair, I don't mind doing the extra work. The issue is that the tasks were supposed to be done by somebody else. I've complained this one too many times, but I'm gonna say this again, I hate dealing with and covering up for N. She's always vocal about wanting to do this and that, aspiring to host so and so, but in the end she messes them up, really. The petition form she crafted was badly written or poorly proofread. There was one whole hanging sentence ". . and the people of Gaza "; like what the f?

Dia buat kerja last minute, tapi bukan nak buat betul2. I mean, I do last minute work all the time, but make sure you don't compromise the quality lah! Kalau setakat nak pull out a petition online, I could have done it for them! It was rather unprofessional having to write columns for "name, hometown, signature" on each individual forms. What more, it should have contained at least an email address to make it seem more legit!

And the others? Yes, let's bitch about the others. Mereka semua menghilangkan diri by the time the panel started, leaving K and me manning the booths. I didn't get to watch the biggest event UofC has ever hosted before because people completely got swept away with the program. 'Course, they also had friends from different universities come for the talk, so excited nak layan diorang lagi.

At the end of the day, it was S and I who had to do the clean up when everybody else magically vanished into thin air. Didn't they care at all about the petition we made everybody sign? Didn't they remember the money in the shoe boxes we plead people to donate? How about the signed letters to President Elect Obama they were insistent on having? Was it all for show? Let the kuli bataks handle the aftermath? Bloody shirkers diorang ni. Sumpah sakit hati, tak tipu!

S tu pun satu. Two-faced. She complained about hosting the event because the "MSA has never been politically active, and it's gonna look very Arab-biased that we're only doing such an event now". Not long after pura-pura chummy chummy dengan L and konon-konon excited nak kira duit in the donation boxes. Pleaselah, she was literally hiding behind me when this photographer for the Maroons came to take our pictures because she didn't wanna be associated with the event. Takut sangat ngan siapa pon tak tahu. Berani kerana benar, takut kerana salah lah! Darnit man, bengang gile rase macam nak gigit!

Another thing that I've been bottling up about S is the way she completely undermines my role and tasks. Or the way she rudely interrupts me in times when we're approaching people to sign up for events, buy tickets. She'd literally cut me off when I've started talking even when a person has specifically looked at me for the answer. How rude is that? It's not like there is nobody else for her to exert her "excellent people skills" on.

Besides, one person dominating the whole conversation and the obvious tension between us would look very unprofessional on our side. Eyh, move over lah bitch. Make room for this little ass. Kita buat kerja ni satu team, bukannya car salesperson or multi-level marketing punye orang yang kena lumba-lumba nak dapat commission.

Benci. Benci. Benci. Benci. Benci.

Hoooboy, just needed to get that out of my system. It's the PMS that's doing the talking. The tears should come soon. Don't worry, once the tears come, I'll forget this ever happened.

Buka Mata Luas-luas

As I write this entry, I feel very inspired, though distressed at the same time. Less than 24 hours ago, I complained that I feel very shallow for not knowing much about the Israel-Palestine conflict. But we've all got to start somewhere, right? I have seen before my eyes and for the first time, the sufferings of Palestinians at the Gaza strip, having attended a film screening about the Gaza Strip held by the MSA less than 2 hours ago.

I realized a long time ago that a sound education is all these side things you learn, not truly the raw Math, Econ, or science being preached in class. But this is the first time (well, the couple of times) I truly felt the magic of informational panel, screenings that goes beyond the scope of academics. Safe to say that I do not yet have the full picture per se, but at least now I won't go all glossy-eyed when I hear people talk about Zionists, Gaza strip (West Bank), Hamas, by-laws and all that.

Basically, the Zionists have been progressively pushing Palestinians out of their own rightful land since 1948 (when Israel was wrongfully established). They hide behind the facade of targeting Hamas militants (a political, yet also humanitarian group that serves its people by setting up schools, mosques; which is why they were elected) and get immense support from the American government in terms of machineries, fighter planes, weaponries. (Okay. . . so that far I knew before--to some extent--but it feels great being able to put everything together).

When they hold Gaza under siege under the claim that Hamas started bombing South of Israel first (which are makeshifts, homemade bombs, unlike the massive killers the former have), they are in fact doing what we can only call as ethnic cleansing because they kill innocent children (I saw disturbing images of children being massacred in the film), civilians, bulldoze their homes, cut down their trees and stop all forms of medicine, food and supplies in and out of the strip. As ridiculous it may sound to the rest of the world, it's amazing how the Zionists believes steadfastly that Palestine does not exist when in fact it is the other way around.

Not only are the Palestinian people suffering physically, Israel is also playing mental warfare. In the film, there was a footage on how during the second Intifada (uprise of the Palestinians), Israel dropped gas canisters containing god-knows-what-poison that rendered many into catatonic states and seizures. They trick kids by leaving glove-like looking items that contain bombs, and I personally saw the ugly remains of a boy whose life was taken by it. Worse, the media (especially US mainstream media) makes it seem that the Zionists are only doing what's best to defend their "country" from Hamas' attacks, and that Hamas is using its people as shields and they themselves are killing their own people. Absurd!

At various points in the film, the eyes could do nothing but shed tears while the heart feel pain. It was completely humbling to see how the children there learn to fight by throwing stones at the borders (where Israel has built their stone wall separating their "territory"), because that is the only way they know to defend their homeland, their family, their homes. I whine about my problems and my so called deprived childhood (which now doesn't seem like such a big deal at all) but Alhamdulillah I still turned out fine, didn't I? Tak pernah pun tak cukup makan, bapak kena masuk penjara, kena berhenti sekolah jual surat khabar and pergi baling batu dekat army yang musnahkan my home, kan? Sumpah, insaf seketika.

Furthermore, I'm blessed with the opportunity to live in a peaceful country and enjoy the things I take for granted like the freedom to walk around without fears and insecurity. I quote a boy in that film, "What is there to live for? In the end, I am nothing. I wish I could just die, because death must be better than this". At that point, I wish I could teleport into that film and shake that boy real hard and tell him not to give up because God will always makbulkan doa orang-orang yang teraniaya.

Then again, what can one youth do to help restore their faith to live and keep fighting or at least surviving? Many many organizations in the country are circulating petitions and conducting phone marathons to put pressure on the American government to end the siege in Gaza. I learned from true stories of the organizations here in Chicago that by calling government lines, the congressman's office and telling them that you care about the ongoing assault on Palestine and wants it to stop, they may give in after a few weeks to sit down and talk things out with the organization.

Note to self: You can sign petitions calling to end this absurdity. You can attend these kinds of informative events, learn more about it and inform more people about the cruelty that is going on, about the assault on Palestinian people. You can read more literature on this, keep yourself informed, feel their sufferings and empathize with them. You can donate some of that money you use to waste on Coach bags and Forever 21 clothes, Nj. Most importantly, you can consistently pray to Allah that justice will rise above all, and strength be with the Palestinians.

Owh, YOU can too!

The Malady of Discontent (in rojak)

Hey you reading this entry, paham tak maksud penat? Penaaaat sangat. Like penat yang banyak kerja tapi malas nak buat because balik dorm dah malam sangat. And sakit kaki. Oooh, complain-complain sakit badan bunyi macam orang tua pulak. Padahal next 3 months baru nak masuk 2 decades hidup dalam dunia ni. Ehem, yes, that's a hidden hint if you read between the lines, memang sebenarnya nak promote my birthday. I used to do it out in the open, ingat-ingatkan papa lah, my brothers and sisters, and melalak kat dorm. But it's high time I curtailed my childish manners and start acting my age, huh?

Hm, but apakan daya, perlu jugak iklan my birthday since I can already predict the nothingness that will happen on that day. Complete hambarness. Itu adalah kerana minggu birthday saya minggu final exam ye, rakan-rakan. Aaaah, benci quarter system. Tahiness. Hm, last year at least ada jugak the Malaysians, plus my other Asian friends datang pull a good drunken prank on me, but this year, masakan berlaku 'cuz Jay Sern has moved to Regents. Eyh, tapi itu adversity tiga bulan akan datang. Let's talk about my malady hari ini, shall we?

This morning woke up with a severe stomachache yang stok guling-guling atas katil and curl up bawah selimut pon cannot take it away. Aha! What else can it be if not that time of the month? "Dah agak dah!" *read aloud in haughty manner, please* Dahla, you know, when you're not prepared for it, adalah extra steps yang perlu dilakukan. But basically, totally unnecessary kepenatan pada pagi ini.

Hm, physically tired boleh handle, but bila the mentally tired part comes in, cannot handle! So, to cut a long story short, let's just say I got into an Econ section that I'm not really happy about, and thus had to do some class shopping. (Class shopping, for those who have never heard of it, is when you sit in for a few different classes and decide which ones you like best and consequently try your utmost best to add/drop classes before Friday of the first week). Basically, I sat through 3 Econ lectures. The instructors were 3 different men of different ages and different dressings with yet very different approaches to teaching = pening kepala!

I have heard the term "technology" a gazillion times today, and "isoquants" and production costs, production functions but they still remain in a region so mysterious, and dark. Bukannya I'm complaining about the extra contact time (yes, that's good, I admit), but maksaalahnya (that's how my niece, Yaya says masalahnya), lecture diorang tak coherent langsung. And to stay or not to stay in my Econ section still remains a question. But there is one perk about staying in thy section: the instructor, Sebastien Gay sangat DILF ya. Ooops, sorry, if ada kanak-kanak bawah umur.

Of course, the 'Wreck-Nj's-Day Award' hands down goes to the MSA (Muslim Student's Association) meeting. It was a very long, very disorganized, very heated 3-hour meeting. But by far, this has got to be the most entertaining meeting we've ever had so far. Imaginelah, banyak drama siot diorang ni. The vice president resigned from his post, apparently he had a fallout with Mr. President badan lawa (yes, badan die sangat menggiurkan, punggung dia juga sangat comel).

Based on hearsay, they've been avoiding each other since end of last quarter; kereta park jauh-jauh, and VP jarang duduk bilik. Tadi pon, when the Mr. P announced VP's resignation, the former also snidely commented that "if VP wants to email us the reason or some sort of explanation, he would be most welcomed to". Drama tak drama? Boleh tahan diorang ni. Thought it was just Malays and their phDs or girls and their competitive spirits.

Hm, since this seems to be my wailing wall for now, let me just throw it in here skalik: I JUST WANNA SHOOT MYSELF or shove myself up some animal's ass sebab sebenarnya berbulu je nak buat ini nak buat itu banyak, tapi still very ignorant/uninformed about many, many things. I sympathize our fellow Muslims in Palestine, but do I really know what's truly going on? Jawapannya mestilah tidak. Siapa Norman Finkelstein? Siapa John Mearsheimer? Ali Abunimah? No idea. But Sami Al-Arian saya tahu.

Tapi tak cukup. How can I say my ultimate goal in life is to do community service when I know so little? Does it come with time and experience? Entahla buu (dalam hati harap ya). Tulah Nj, kutuk lagi Mat salleh ni "tak pandai sangatlah . . . Asians lagi pandai lah," tapi, the enlightened ones are very the enlightened. So, Nurjannah Iman Syaqirene Ahmat, sila habiskanlah membaca The Economist yang berlambak and mengumpul debu atas your bookshelf.

(Luahan hati kategori lain) Somehow, I can sense something building up inside of me. This is truly something I'd rather keep to myself, but I'll just beat around the bush, since I'm lonely here in Chicago, and who can I tell but that ugly reflection in the mirror (nanti orang ingat gila pulak senyum lebar kat diri sendiri) or squirrels (that even by now has retired to their holes and homes) roaming on campus? Tapi cukuplah that you know some days I burst with happiness, squeal with delight, and clap my hands macam orang terencat, while some days I carry on still, with the biggest fear of my life .

Roadtrip 2008: Reflections

Hello 2009! Here's to wishing that this new year would be a better one, despite that it has already began with mass bloodshed of innocent Palestinians. A moment to pray that justice, strength and Allah's protection be with them *Amin*. Hm, let's for now put the ugly side of the world aside, and I shall do my best to entertain you with some reflections/comments on the roadtrip downsouth I ended 2008 with.

1. Driving along USA freeways, one has to be ready to sight gruesome and abundant roadkills. It's upsetting to see countless of porcupines, hedgehogs, skunks, squirrels, hares, deers and dogs so dead, lifeless and sometimes brutally mauled by the shoulders of the highways. Along the way to Key West, the Southernmost and last of Florida Keys, we even spotted a dead baby alligator as we passed an 'alligator crossing' zone. (I kid you not, they really had that signboard).

On that same journey, there were signs reminding drivers about roadkills and the statistics was truly bad! When the authorities plant such signage, drivers should take caution and be wary of any kind of poor animals that may be wandering on the roads we human have selfishly built over their natural habitats. The heart breaks looking at those poor dead animals. If you don't want to lose your kids, those animals don't wanna lose their babies too. Have a heart!

2. Truckers are one horny group of people, or so I've come to learn. But the fact that some desperate women seek horny truckers to gratify their sexual needs is even more disturbing. I have been told by a believable source (one whose Sex Education knowledge goes up to the 400-s level) that some women hang about at truck rest areas just to "get it on" with truck drivers.

That truckers are sexually thirsty is not quite surprising since some do travel on the roads across vast USA for weeks without any form of entertainment. But the real telltale sign were billboards advertising adult superstores (ie Lion's Den, XXX Megastore) that we observed throughout our roadtrip. They came as far as to advertising discounts and special benefits for truck drivers, and that would imply you know what lah kan?

3. I have come to realize that if I were better in physics, had better drawing skills, and could properly draw straight lines (yes I am sadly impaired) I would have chosen to take up architecture and devoted my life to working on designing themeparks. I have always been fascinated by thrill rides and roller coasters and themeparks, and I just realized how tres cool it would be to be the one behind creating these dreamlands. Disneyworld has truly shown me how far themeparks can go in terms of creating a place where everyone can truly be happy and let their imaginations run wild.

All of their major rides are housed in meticulously detailed structures according to the theme. Haunted Mansion was truly a haunted mansion in manifestation, The Twilight Zone Hollywood Tower of Terror was an old, classic hotel structure decorated to the smallest detail, Test Track was set like a GM car assembling factory. In short, the waiting bit was an important part of the whole Disney experience, and in some cases like the Kali Rapids Expedition, the more significant part.

4. If you are an ardent Gossip Girl follower, you may have heard of "pulling a Jenny", which means one acts rebelliously and foolishly like how Jenny the little Humphrey does in the series. Hm, likewise, this trip has seen to many "pulling an Nj" or "Nj moments". These two terms designate an action that is careless or forgetful and silly, just as how I act sometimes.

For example, Isa "pulled an Nj" when he dropped the coins onto the highway at an Orlando toll plaza, corresponding to this one time during our winter break at NYC last year when I dropped my whole collection of coins from my wallet at a Ripley's Believe It or Not's spiraling coin thingamajig.

The most hysterical incident must be when I myself "pulled an Nj" as I lost my contact lenses in the morning before we left for Key West, and resigning to the fact that it was gone until I found it in my eye that night itself. But really, I even asked Asma whether it was in my eye, and even she confirmed it wasn't. My only guess to fathoming this mystery was that the contact lens got stuck at the back or top of my eyeball because I did give that eye a jolly good rub. *Giggles*

5. Dreams do come true. When I was about 5 or 6, I would pore for hours over the Disneyland map at the back of the Disney magazines I bought, marveling at the wonderful rides and places, imagining how it was like. Then when I was in high school, I had a girlfriend who has been to Disneyland/Disneyworld so many times that most of the towels she used in the dorm were Disneyland/Disneyworld towels.

13 years later, now that is, my childhood fantasy of going to Disneyland truly came true, and I could have bought as many Disneyworld towels as I wanted to! We let our inner child loose and wore black and pink mickey hairbands as a team and clapped and shouted over the smallest thing that excited us there at Disneyworld. Minus me boobies, I definitely passed off as a 12-year old at Disneyworld =P

6. If you think you've seen your fair share of fireworks, you've obviously not seen what they do with fireworks at Disneyworld! For two nights in a row, first at Magic Kingdom then at Epcot, I shouted like a 4-year old girl, eyes transfixed on the display of marvel in the sky. Never in my life have I seen fireworks that form smileys and numbers (countdown during New Year's Eve), colors ranging more than the usual orange, yellow and red (they had purple, pink, red, green, turquoise) and unique bursts of light and fire . . . until Disneyworld.

They spend a fortune on fireworks every single night, that it's not even funny. We wondered whether Disney actually makes enough money to cover its costs (fireworks, advertisement, workers' wages, maintenance, shuttle buses), but then looked down at the Disney bags in our hands and thought again about how much money families spend on souvenirs and food besides the tickets and thought no further. Uhuh, I'm gonna have to survive on ugly dining hall food and refrain from unnecessary, impulsive shopping until March. But we'll see how long this vow lasts. *Snickers*
