Crunch Time, Mak-time

A cup of harmless (or so I thought) Cappucino kept my mind on a non-stop, 3 hour replay of variables, constants, alphabets, assumptions and models last night (or morning to be exact). Hilariously enough, these were things that escaped me this morning, when I needed them most.

One by one those dreadful letters and numbers just up and left, abandoning me in my combat against all things evil in fiscal and monetary policy. I try to tell myself, "I am not alone, I am not alone, I am not alone". I am not alone, am I?

As of the moment, that is what I am, alone. Alone in threading 6 pages worth of words and the harvest of thoughts I have gathered over the course of 11 weeks. It's okay, words are easier than letters that when combined, don't make sense. At the end of the day, words penned down well earn me a warm heart.

Statistics will then conquer my time, the minute I raise my fingers that have done away with its typing. As the clock strikes 8.30pm tomorrow, another journey will be revisited. Some numbers to run, a few papers to examine, and a hell lot of typing to be done.

Then? The struggle ends there. Full stop. Just as sudden as it came. I pray I have enough strength, courage and faith to go on. Amin.

"Scandalous Lives of UChicago's Elite"

I have not slept in my own bed for the past 4 nights. Scandalous much, right?

It is in fact, a scandal in it's finest form, I tell you. I have been spending my cold nights huddled up in someone else's space, on someone else's bed. Wait, you're not going to tell anyone, are you? Please don't. I have to live up to my heavily Muslim name (Nurjannah Iman Syaqirene) you know.

What's that you said? I didn't quite hear you. Oh, you don't know what my name means? I don't know if I should tell you. Well, well, it's for me to know and for you to find out. Let's leave it at the fact that I probably don't live up to my good name as much as I want to.

Yeah, man, especially now that I'm sleeping with someone else.

Oh yeah, you heard me right. I'm simply enjoying my intimate nights with a certain someone. Someone by the name of Joe.

There is no more incredible feeling in the world than losing yourself in the arms of a strong man while he indulges your every sense. To see, to feel, touch, to taste, to smell. Uh-huh, we do all that, Joe and I.

Halt! Don't jump the gun just yet. I don't smell smell (or sniff, make of it how you want) him, his feet or that certain part of the human anatomy I'm sure you are thinking about. Nor do I touch whatever you think I do. You have despicable thoughts, sheesh.

What exactly am I intimating, then? Well, you know, the innocent stuff. To see is to look into the other's eye. To touch is to feel the warmth of the other sitting right beside you. To taste is . . . to literally, bite into your guilty pleasures of chocolates and sins. (Gotcha there, didn't I). And to smell is to smell another's presence beside you, just from the way his clean, crisp clothes smell, or the noticeble scent of his perfume.

But what I love most about Joe is that he understands my intellectual pursuits and the sacrifices I make for them. He doesn't mind that we are surrounded by obnoxious, loud people. All he wants to do is just blanket me with his warmth and whisper encouraging and sweet, sweet thoughts into my ears. It tickles me, feeling his hot breath against my sensitive ears. But it's a feeling like. No. Other. (to emphasize just how that feeling felt like no other).

For the most part, Joe accommodates my search for ideas and entertains my nightly thoughts about making a difference in the world. I talk, I type, while Joe sings and Joe writes. What does he write? He writes the most meaningful missives, left on tables after tables so that I can read his words and remember his presence wherever I go. He is romantic that way, you know.

Ah, what a fresh new world you show me, Joe.

Because of that, Joe, I'm devoting 5 more nights with you. 5 more nights with you, and I will soar high above the horizons as you take me to places I have never been, Joe. 5 more nights of just you and me. Yes, you and me, Joe. How can life get any better than this?

For all this, I heart you Joseph Regenstein.

His name, in full, is Joseph Regenstein Library, folks. Of course we play SAFE, need you even ask?

Disclaimer: Euphemism. Self-explanatory. The chirpy tone, and sensational foreplay? Nothing but a twisted version of the sad, (and really twisted) things I actually do and will continue to do at Joseph Regenstein Library. It's true I haven't been sleeping in my beloved bed the past 4 nights, though. I sleep IN Joseph Regenstein Library, indeed!

What's Floating NJ's Boat?

Punca-punca keterapungan bot/sampan/perahu Nurjannah:
Masalah subletter? Setel!

From: Rachel Belanger
Subject: Re: 54th & Cornell, Jan-March 2010, $500
To: NJ

Hey NJ,

Is your room still available to sublet? I've explored a couple other options, and yours is my best one. It would be great to meet your roommate before totally committing, but I'm sure I'd be able to live with her. Let me know what's next...

Thanks!
Rachel
Gadis yang akan mengambil alih bilik saya benar-benar wujud, in the flesh bak kata orang putih; dan saya sudah pun bertemu dengannya dua hari yang lepas. It's a small world after all, kerana kami rupa-rupanya pernah mengambil kursus Environmental Studies bersama-sama.

Kami juga telah mengumpat tentang pensyarah kursus itu yang bosan lagi memualkan, Sir Peter Crane, (ya, he was knighted for his contributions to the Kew Botanical Gardens. Agak cool, tapi faktor ini will be discounted bila anda masuk kelasnya dan lihat kaca mata, pakaian serta intonasi suaranya yang boring).

Beliau adalah epitomi kepada segala stereotype yang wujud dalam kepala otak saya tentang kebosanan orang Inggeris (as opposed to Anglo Americans). Jangan tanya saya kenapa, but I'm averse to a lot of things British. Mintak simpang malaikat 44 jika saya perlu menonton wayang-wayang British. Sangat tak kuasa. Dahla gigi kuning and tak handsome (with the exception of Ed Westwick). And I digress.

Tidak akan menghadapi set masalah ekonomi dan statistik. Selama-lamanya!
Okay, I lied. Bukan selama-lamanya, only in my dreams. Pencipta R wajar menerima Nobel Prize. Terima kasih kerana membuat orang yang paling bodoh IT rasa pandai sebentar. By the by, kalau awak dah pernah nampak saya kecoh tentang ini, diam-diam sahaja. I've said it once, and I'm going to say it again, Statistics suck balls!

Kenapa lampi sangat?

First fall of snowflakes on my shoulders
Maklumlah, awal-awal musim salju memang sexciting. Tunggulah 3, 4 minggu nanti when the novelty wears off, akan saya complain pasal sejuk nak mampus, inches of snow yang oh-so-annoying.

Now that you are privy to my source of transient happiness, you should know that hell awaits me. Sila wish me good luck dan beri sokongan padu dan jitu kerana saya akan cuba jadi Superwoman untuk buat (dan fail) segala-galanya. Nothing short than suicide, Kamikaze style!

"Houston, We Have a Problem"

. . . An effing problem with procrastination, that is.

On a less self-denigrating note, here's one of those songs that you just gotta fall in love with once introduced to. On days that just isn't fall but not quite winter, short of hours before doomsday strikes, this is a always a good song for the lonely. Heck, it's a good song for the lonely. Period.

Kadang Kala, Tahi Berlaku

This coming January, I'll be ditching the harsh Midwestern winter for the sun and all its glory in Cape Town, South Africa. Good for me, right? Yeah, awesome possum. But the possum isn't so awesome when what ensues the prospect of participating in study abroad programs is the arduous task of subleasing my apartment.

Mind you, it is not as easy as publishing friendly ads online and slapping eye-catching posters around campus while you goyang-goyang kaki and wait for those e-mails to flood your inbox. Especially not in the aftermath of the credit crisis and a shaky real estate market in Hyde Park, Chicago, coupled with the fact that less students transfer to the UofC during the winter quarter (who in their right minds would trade their comfort zone for deep snow that loses its novelty after a week and the awful wind chills that chap your lips and crack your skin, right?).

And especially not when you are a susceptible victim of deceit of one of those *tooting* Nigerian scams. Especially not that *blood pressure rising, temple throbbing*.

Did I just lose you at "Nigerian scam"? Are you nodding your head now? Never heard of a "Nigerian scam"? Well today is your lucky day, because with the powers personal experience has vested upon me, I will brief you about those *tooting* schemes.

In my college, this Nigerian scam phenomena is so prevalent that you're a social leper if you don't receive their emails. Congratulations to myself, because in a field I would rather not, I am not a loser. I used to receive an average of 3 fraud emails a week. The emails begin and end with extremely polite salutations involving the use of God's name in vain, perhaps to latch you on with their *cough*fake*cough good manners.

The conman then establishes himself/herself as the legal attorney of si polan who has just passed on and would like to honor si polan's wishes by granting you an X sum of money as testified in si polan's will.

It's entertaining and indeed laughable to think I am suddenly related to a good 20 plus people in Africa (presumably Nigeria) or that I can become a millionaire overnight without lifting an eyebrow. (Mungkinlah I have a penchant for sexy African/African American men, but I'm pretty sure the last time I checked I am born and bred a Malaysian Malay (ha ha)). It's even more entertaining to think that these people think people can be had.

Realizing that half the world are chuckling at their petty stratagems, these lowly creatures are now penetrating the online sales market. They scour sites like craigslist, ebay and college marketplaces and pretend to be interesting in buying and selling.

They pretend to be innocent, non-smoking female college students studying in UK who are transferring to The University of Chicago and are looking for a place to sublet. They also pretend to be the naive young girl who needs daddy to write the eager tenant a check and who waits for daddy to present her with ultimate directives.

Oh, don't worry, the only money I've lost over the weekend was to a Juicy Couture purse (handbag for the non-initiated) and 3 pairs of new shoes I don't need (damn those Black Friday sales). Receiving a check for $4500 signed by a different payer (not Laura Baily or Martin Scott) from a bank in California when I asked for $600, while the FedEx was delivered from Maryland when daddy is in Essex just points to something fishy that I can smell 10 000 miles away.

What I've lost was the time and effort spent over a long, week-to-week correspondence with an imaginary Laura Baily and her daddy, Martins Scott. What I've lost, is apparently my common sense; because how on earth did I not realize that daddy should have been a something Baily? What I've lost is my fuse because right now I want to kentut in the faces of the a-holes behind these nasty ruses.

Learn your lesson from my lesson learned: Bad english (beyond the common "that's mean" or "oversea") is a telltale sign of a scam. Especially when the foul language is coming from someone who's presumably "English" and residing in Essex, UK.

Pictures For Another Day

I have a volume of pictures compromising my delicate identity as a cutie (haha). Really. Feast on your eyes on these latest (or old, if you want to be technical) snapshots that have found its way to my collection.

Imagine my horror when a primary schoolmate posted these old pictures on Facebook, where they are available to all willing eyes and ready laughter.

They were taken circa 2000, and I was bawling next to Sofia (one of my dearest friends) over our UPSR results. Uh-uh, I was that lame; to think it was only UPSR and I obviously had a farther journey and a million more hardships to endure (like the current battle with this procrastination disease I contracted in my tertiary education).

But it's okay, I'm actually keeping an inventory of these sensationally ugly pictures for memories of what a silly jester I am. I think It's important to be able to see unpolished images of yourself, because after all, the most human of people are people who can laugh at themselves.

Keep the pictures coming. We have an album to fill and with that, years of laughter ahead, friends =)

Am I Doing The Pantomime?

"Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinion, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation." -Oscar Wilde
What if we are nothing underneath our skin? Perhaps we are merely a collection of thoughts learned, quotes found, passions emulated and dreams followed. Maybe I am. The thought is too depressing for a weekend half wasted. Oh tidak. I need some green tea ice-cream. And some catching up with the surreal biatches living their unrealistic lives in the Upper East Side. Oh boy.

Open Letter to Nima from Azriel

In another compartment of my life, there is that world of Ben10, High School Musical and Hannah Montana I am missing. Because, in another life outside of school, I am Nima, the young aunt to two very precious kids. The knowledge that there are two idolizing kids putting me high up on a pedestal is such an empowering feeling. It keeps me going.

Attached herewith is a letter--obviously written by my dear and only sister--in the voice of my nephew Ayell, that has brought me much warmth despite the encroaching winter. (Yup, fishcake and curry, winter is hurling here in a hurry!)

Dear Nima,

We received your Halloween Card with much love and thanks. Kakak Myra was soo happy to receive it that she actually kissed the card a few times. I (Ayell) was psyched too and instantly took a pen to sign my autograph on the envelope and when Kakak scolded me I proceeded to bite her hand... That was fun coz I enjoyed being Dracula.. Die die die!!

Anyways, we miss you lots and looking forward to receiving the much promised costumes for next year's Halloween.. and oooh, some candies would be good too!! hehehehe especially Mummy's favorite Resse's Pieces cup and other Hershey's goodies. And knowing Mummy she will surely have her own list of her wants - what else is new? Papa's already given up on trying to change Mummy's shopaholic-ness.. :))

Kakak Myra will be going to HSM the Musical in December with Mummy and seperti biasa I kena tinggal lah... Ben10 is on next weekend but Mummy says that we can't go coz we nak balik kampung.. So kesian me right?.. But no worries, I will terrorize Mummy and Kakak so bad they will regret not taking me to HSM.. Gooo Wildcats!!

Mummy is currently looking for a HSM related costume for Kakak to wear to show and I know exactly the cheerleader uniform that Kakak can wear.. In fact, I can also wear the Wildcats Jersey if I'm allowed to come.. However, Mummy says that it is too expensive in Mothercare for something we'll only wear once and so she's currently looking for some knockoffs.. Well I wish her good luck!!

I think that's about it for now.. You should really check out my pictures at Mummy's Flickr.. I must say I've grown into such a handsome Japanese / Korean boy lookalike being, unlike my Uncle Sir.. hehehe but sometimes Mummy says that i look a lot like Uncle Sir and that my temper is exactly like his too.. that's kinda scary, but i wouldn't mind being smart and articulate like him and you...

Do take care Nima, and remember that we love you lots!! You should really call Mummy soon coz I think she needs to trash out her not so teenage drama life with you.. Surely you don't think you're the only ones with the drama do you? hehehe.

Your Nephew,
Azriel Ben10 Mirza Ultraman Hasmanizar

ps: you should also check out this hangat cum notty pic of Kakak Myra and Aunkie Long 'drinking' during Aunkie Long's birthday lunch... Sheeshhh right? hehehe
 N.B:
Uncle Sir is my brother's moniker among the kids. He has this Hitler-like dream that the kids would snap to his command and salute in respect when greeting him with the nickname. And the thing is, they idolize him so much that they really do hang on to Uncle "Cher's" every word, ie Nima gets beaten every time Uncle "Cher" tells the kids to. Dammit.

Aunkie is aunty in baby talk of the Ismail household. Comel lah sangat sampai rasa nak picit-picit budak-budak ni.

Project Apartment 2009

The present me is nothing like the old me.

The old me, during her high school years, had boys to finish her woodwork for the practical component of Living Skills Studies. The old me got her sawed pieces done, only to find that she couldn't connect the pieces together because her "tanggam parit" was not level. She then miraculously found her project become Jack's. Jack, by the way, was a year older, and had no business whatsoever in the Living Skills workshop. Jack would cordon off some time for my woodwork and even recruited a couple of friends to help expedite the "Help Poor Nj's Ugly Woodwork Project".

The story did not not end there. My multi-purpose wood box was to come with a quilted cover. The beginning of the project was easy enough. I picked a cool-looking cotton cloth, I cut the pieces, quilted it fine, had the teacher trim the edges, but patience I had none when it came to fitting the cover over the woodwork. Off to a tailor in SS2 the cover went. And that, my friends, was how bad I was at all things practical.

But as I said, the present me is nothing like her old, inept self, especially after I find myself heavily vested in a pet project dubbed Project Apartment 2009.

Project Apartment 2009 was not an easy task. It began in April with a search for an apartment, and it couldn't just be the high-rise apartments most international students seem to prefer. I held fast to a dream of living in a quaint, walk-up apartment that was as far away from campus as I could get. Most students who embarked into the off-campus world would opt to live within walking distance from the quads, but I wanted to to be put up close to the lakefront (Lake Michigan).

5430 S. Cornell Ave, Apt. 5R possessed the fierce desires of my heart, and more. Papers were signed, fantasies began, and the project was flagged off.

The search for all things interior and secondhand was by all means long and difficult. But tenacity (and not to mention superior persistent bugging and bargaining skills) pays off, because my roommate Samina and I, both have a place we will be in love with until the day we leave school.

The new me, is someone who disassembled and re-assembled her secondhand furniture, from scratch. Armed with an Ikea toolbox (borrowed, and not yet returned, haha) and sometimes no instruction manual, I screwed, hit, twisted and pushed things into place. Sometimes it took an extra limb or two or required interesting squatting positions or laying down on pieces, and I did it all. Sometimes it took gentle hammering and patience to dislodge a piece while other times required simultaneous jumping, pushing and grunting. But it's all good.

The new me, is someone who painted a feature wall with her favorite color all by herself. For a first timer, it is a job well-done if I must say so myself. There are minimal smudges where the masking tape gave in to the paint, but otherwise I took the pains of wiping the paint with warm water when the stain was unbearable for this naked eye. The new me, is also someone who painted a full-length mirror just so everything in the room matches, and the white bare walls opposite the feature wall didn't look too boring.

The new me takes pride in knowing the different tools in the toolbox and praises the Living Skills curriculum for that. The new me is someone who thinks of playing engineer and tries to repair a broken DVD player, and then surprises herself completely when she miraculously does.

The new me has a home she sort of built from scratch, and she is proud of that.

The new me, unfortunately, is still too short to change a light bulb without a chair. Dammit!

Credits to Chong Han and Saleema Nawab for helping Samina and I transport our stuff on that rainy, gloomy day in June. Heartfelt thanks to Adam Johari and Kudzai Ndondo who spent days helping us carry everything in and out of the car or UHaul, via flights of stairs, firescape and spiral staircase and finally, into our home. Adam Johari and Adzwan Anuar also took this little kid to the funland called Ikea, and she owes them one.

Hugs to Samina Lutfeali who shared my ideals and built this comfortable home together. Special thanks goes to Maggie Chow and Huiying Chan for selling me a bulk of the furniture in my room. Project Apartment 2009 couldn't have materialized without these people. Grazie and gracias again.

Sleepless in Chicago Waiting for Perfect Man to End Her Sleepless Nights

I'm accepting boyfriends with captivating cover letters and brilliant CVs. Talents aside boring academic achievements and computer literacy are given strong preference. Although a good GPA is a strong indicator of your priorities (be it upright, or not right), I am willing to overlook that tiny detail if "spooning" is included in your list of experiences.

Merits are given to men who possess the ability to make others laugh, who don't mind listening to a woman's pointless, verbose stories and most importantly, who is not berkira. You will automatically be considered if the application covers some experience in patiently waiting for an indecisive girl while she shops.

All things considered, applicants with successful achievements at domestic capacities (like cooking, washing, cleaning) will be shortlisted for Webcam interviews. This is not, in any way, hinting at the possibility I will make a lousy wife. Rather, I am looking for men who would like to share the love and burden in the upkeep of a household, and not the "You duduk dapur, I tengok bola, makan pizza jadi buncit" kind of guy.

A detailed account of your previous relationships are encouraged, but not required. Note that intimacy and how you "got physical" with your exes are one of the few things I absolutely don't have to know, don't want to know and don't need to know about. Euw and double euw.

Since I am an equal opportunity "recruiter", I ask that you please don't include your passport-sized photos. I look for your "voice" in the CV, not your handsome Bollywood face, your mancung, mat salleh-like nose, or your $1000 braces, thank you very much.

Personality, no doubt, triumphs over beauty, but I would be extremely delighted if you could kindly insert snapshots of your fingers and arms. Long, nimble fingers are my fetish, and strong-looking arms with tersembul-sembul veins are the kinds I dig, kapiche?

Effective immediately, with an open deadline to date. No longer accepting applications once this frantic search for the imperfect men perfectly perfect for the imperfect me is over.

Please revert applications to njahmat@734 eh eh tekan tekan tak dapat.

JFL ya'll. (Just for laughs). Just for laughs, right. And to let off some steam as I pull off, yet again, a late night in the library.

As a parting treat, enjoy some cheesy ads I found from fusion101.com.

SINGLE BLACK FEMALE seeks male companionship, ethnicity unimportant. I'm a very good looking girl who LOVES to play. I love long walks in the woods, riding in your pickup truck, hunting, camping and fishing trips, cozy winter nights lying by the fire. Candlelight dinners will have me eating out of your hand. I'll be at the front door when you get home from work, Call (xxx) xxx-xxxx and ask for Daisy. Our Note: The ad above turned out to be an adoption offer for a black labrador retriever 8 week female from the Atlanta humane Society. It had 15,000 calls from men all over the country!!!!

Knight Seek His Queen
Male Seeking Female, 28 years old, 6’ 4” tall
This knight in shining armour is seeking an audience with the queen. If you enjoy having a man make you dinner, a man who will sweep you off your feet, treat you to the world of never ending respect, with adventure, humor, kindness, relaxation, and love mixed in for a solid foundation, than perhaps you are the queen for me. The Knight requests a Queen who will dress to impress. I will bow at your feet. If I sound interesting or you have a wish to find the man of your dreams, look no further, your Knight in shining armour has arrived.

When I was thirty my dates had to be young, tall, handsome, rich, intelligent. Now I'm 64, they only have to know how to read and use the telephone!

Bopping to BEP, Finally

You may have seen this video on YouTube or Facebook, but I'm putting it here just to remind myself how lucky I am to be given the chance to study abroad, namely in Chicago, The Windy City. You should know that when my brother alerted me about the video this summer when we were lazing about and stalking people on Facebook, I had tears in my eyes. Tears of what? Of joy, of pride, of exuberance, of giddiness, of sadness that I missed it all . . . I don't know.

Although I bitch about the academic integrity, The Life of The Mind and the load of crap my school prides itself on, I am here, aren't I? I'm learning from the best set of educators, working alongside the creme de la creme from the world and over, and I'm living in a great metropolitan that offers me a wider perspective on what is the world. There is something exclusively awesome about getting the chance to be in Chicago, and I can't quite express it in words.

All I have to do is suck it up, hold my head up high, and make the most of my time here, not just thinking about making  the most of my time here.

p/s: I realized my past two entries have been centered around sourness, and I don't even recognize my usually chirpy (albeit annoying) self. I must have sounded unlike the happy-go-lucky person you think you know. But there you go, I guess there is more to me than the smile plastered on my face. But we all have our ups and downs, and I hope you don't mind me dwelling on my such phases.

The morale uplift I get from expressing my thoughts (even if it's a tenth of what I feel, and two-thirds of what I really mean) helps, and your readership keeps me alive and wanting to write, eventhough I don't write as often. Thanks!

Fall 2009: An Abridged Update Of My Sad State In Life

"Or we might talk about the other great nemesis of the bathroom cleaner--pubic hair. I don't know what it is about the upper American class, but they seem to be shedding their pubic hair at an alarming rate. You find it in quantity in shower stalls, bathtubs, Jacuzzis, drains, and even, unaccountably, in sinks. I once spent fifteen minutes crouching in a huge four-person Jacuzzi, maddened by the effort of finding the dark little coils camouflaged against the egg-plant colored ceramic background but fascinated by the image of the pubes of the economic elite, which must by this time be completely bald".

-Barbara Ehrenreich, Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By In America.
Loving this witty excerpt read for one of my favorite classes so far. Enjoying my Macroeconomic class' emphasis on the government and welfare. Hating the grades and time-consuming problem sets due almost every day of the week (but what else is new?). A liberal arts education doesn't get any better than this when it gives you a full spectrum of emotional flavors.

The angst of securing a summer internship kicks in, due to impending travel to South Africa in January. Not to mention the strain of living up to the gloating statements I made about not returning home for next summer.

Tears have been shed over personal matters (notwithstanding the fact that the event also occurs once in 30 days, as some acquainted readers would know). But life goes on, this time with the new Macbook soon to be in my possession. I was told by one good friend that "Once [I] go Mac, [I] never go back". This is too sexciting, after 7 weeks of living live without the desirable convenience of working wireless, whenever and wherever I please.

A jump for joy is in line, even if the struggle out of loneliness and proving myself worthy of the rigorous academic life never ends.

Oh, and you noticed? Yeah, I changed my blog layout, for the millionth time, I know.

I'm Not Dying a Katok Virgin

Two years is the amount of time I have patiently confined myself to a diet regime of halal meat that strictly meant Indian/Pakistani cuisine in long stretches of time. Two years is half the duration of my complete stay in Chicago. Two years, simply said, was halfway through the battle against myself.

Yet, I have failed myself. I am not dying a katok virgin, and I'm not proud of that fact.

You think I'm religious? I think not. I think going katok is the least of my worries in the mass of sins and debt I've accumulated against the Almighty. In fact, I don't think it's such a big deal as some legitimize this action by claiming that it stems from the nawaitu of the proprietor. Believe in a valid reason, they say, and your action is vindicated from the wraths of dosa.

Now that is my problem. My being in a major city that allows me access to halal meats and poultry forces me to believe it's not permissible for me. Therefore I have sinned.

Pacing around town with an empty stomach on a cold October night in Chicago was perhaps not the smartest action. The time was 10.30pm. It was a time when restaurants were already closed or were closing their doors to customers, and Cheesecake Factory saw to a long queue waiting for their awesome cheesecake suppers. It was a time when famished people who decided to forgo a sensible early dinner like me was bereft of many choices. Walking into a tavern whose menu bore Buffalo Wings as a specialty was not much help either.

So I succumbed to the physical pain of walking for too long; the psychological angst of waiting too long; the incessant seduction of the devil; and to the expectation of consuming a gastronomical treat I yearned ever so much.

The buffalo wings was not worth the smeared record that was my strongest principle. Dry and tasteless, the buffalo wings repleted me with the strongest lesson that gluttony doesn't pay. I swear that would be my first and last.

I do not blame the night on my companion (who, by the way, happened to take pictures with the intention of blackmailing me). I blame myself. But I am not so intent on wasting my time on matters of the past, the control of agency and the complications of timing and circumstances. Rather, I am more worried about the sense of self and the grip on limitations and principles I am slowly losing.

In more ways than one, this episode tilts me to a series of self-doubt I am not strong enough to combat alone. Sometimes, I feel more alone than ever eventhough the materials of life, I claim, keeps me happy. Friends are long immersed in their own pursuits of academia or life in their separate colleges, while close friends have new close friends of their own.

Self-doubt is undoubtedly self-destructing. I am praying for a turnaround.

What's In A Little Rain?

What's in a little rain?
The smell of grass, a puddle you pass.

What's in a little rain?
A drizzle on my curly hair, a rainbow if you may.

What's in a little rain?
A shifting shadow, a passing time, now that you ask.

What's in a little rain?
Nothing less than a stroll that made my day.

KimbeeTurns 21

Hello, kenalkan kawan saya yang tak handsome ini, namanya Mohammad Shazwan bin Azizan. Please get his name right, it's Shazwan with an (H) aitch and not a (Y); dia tak suka orang salah type/tulis nama dia. Namun begitu, Shazwan lebih famous dengan gelaran Kimbu--an ugly nickname I never quite understood the origins of. Budak boarding school memang nama pelik-pelik, and Kimbu, despite it being derived from Kimi Buto, wasn't the worst in its era.

What you need to understand about Kimbu is that he is one of my two oldest, most ancient friends (the other being Sofia). Bak kata orang, we go back, waaaay back. It's now 11 years and counting for us. But if one wanted to be technical, out of those 11 years, we've only really been friends for 11 minus 2.5 years. 2 years in SKBD when we were never really friends, but mere acquaintance, and another half a year in 2006 when our friendship went on hiatus.

Ya, kami tidak bercakap selama itu dan persahabatan agak terputus begitu sahaja selepas saya meninggalkan our fellow schoolmate for another guy Kimbu deemed poyo. For what it's worth, the poyo guy was kinda poyo, but he was a really nice guy. Anyways, macam mana pun, pusing-pusing jugak, we patched things up dan perkara itu tak pernah kami bincangkan out in the open.

But I've never been more glad that day we became friends again. Kerana, kerana, Kimbu itu duduk 5 minit sahaja from my grandmother's place and we've been threading on the same path for as long as I can remember. From SKBD to KYS, from ADFP to the States, from all that to serving a 12-year bond in Bank Negara, you can say it's going to be awfully difficult for us to avoid each other kalau dah kena pandang muka each other for the rest of our lives, kan?
Dan jika kamu ingin membuat speculation kitorang patut just hook up and kahwin each other, please, please don't. . . don't make us puke.

Kimbu has seen me sleeping with my mouth wide open one too many times, and I've seen his lurah dendam if that matters. Kami mungkin serasi sebagai kawan, dan bapanya mungkin sayang saya (although Nasya mungkin lebih disayangi oleh Uncle Azizan), dan saya mungkin boleh tolerate Kimbu dan OCDnya, dan Kimbu mungkin boleh tolerate kegilaan saya, tapi that's all there is to it: kami akan kawan sampai mati, God willing. Kimbu's take on this is somewhat more practical--"our height difference makes it susah for us to cium". Bagus, at times like this I'm thankful I'm ketot binti spendot.

Now let's move on to the more serious matters, that is, Kimbu's severe OCD. Kimbu is very OCD. Did I mention Kimbu is suffering from a terrible case of OCD? Dia ni jenis yang kalau nampak tali bra orang terpintal-pintal, he'd be itching to straighten it. He is the sort of person who spends long hours Wiki-ing songs and syncing the spelling of his songs on the Ipod so that it matches those of the Wiki entries.

Alas, I find it very contradicting that he is such a cincai boncai person when it comes to cooking. A pinch of this, a spoon of that, throw in this weird ingredient, that ingredient, and voila, you get a taste of Kimbu magnificence. Yes, Kimbu can cook, but weirdly, he cooks like a normal guy, unlike his usual neurotic self in other matters. Tak konsisten sungguh.

Tapi yelah, Kimbu ni pandai memasak. Where I can even destroy something as simple as Maggi Instant Porridge, Kimbu can bake a pumpkin pie to perfection. He, along with Nik Munawwar, gave me a tutorial on egg-cracking, that is, after they laughed their booties off at my inept way of doing so.

Another thing we can all come to appreciate about Kimbu is that he is a wealth of information. For those familiar with How I Met Your Mother, Kimbu can be likened to Ted Moseby. Unlike Moseby whose every line uttered is always teaching someone about something, Kimbu comes annoyingly close. But I've learned aplenty from riding in the car with him, and you might wanna try that if you intend to become smarter. I swear, I'm probably 265-information smarter out of the 265 rides Kimbu has given me, heheh.

Tapi cubalah cari nahas dengan Kimbu pasal spelling, grammar and punctuation and he'll turn into the rightful bitch he can be. Cuba lah berbroken English dengannya, and you'll never hear the end of it. Mungkin dia ungkit balik setelah sebulan, mungkin dia letak status memaki hamun aksi itu di Facebook, mungkin he writes a lenghty post about it at shazwanazizan.blogspot.com. Gedik sungguh mungkin, tapi I agree with his sentiments no less.

Kawan-kawan kami juga pernah berbincang tentang satu lagi keistimewaan cum kecacatan si Kimbu ini, yakni dia ingat segala detail pasal segala detail. Ask him which exact seat he sat in the History Room in Form One, and he can point to it in a jiff. Only he can recall random stuff like the Geography teacher asking a classmate to drum on the table, or what someone said about someone 10 years ago. Dan sebab ini lah maruah saya tercalar, sebab saya tahu dia akan masih ingat lagi warna, bentuk, pattern, brand dan SIZE coli yang saya TERtinggal dalam vannya selepas lawatan kami ke PD tempoh hari. Cis bedebah.

Apa-apa hal pun, saya sebenarnya selalu tak sure birthday dia September 20 atau September 21. Ke September 22? Sebab dulu dia pernah mention lagu M2M yang berbunyi "I remember, date and time, September 22nd, Sunday, 25 after 9, in the doorway, with your caaaase" ada kaitan dengan birthday dia. Jadi saya ambil jalan mudah untuk tulis blog post pasal dia, sebab kalau salah hari pun it's still such an honor and oh-so-sweet, kan?

Kimbu--also known as Sazwan also known as Kimbee, who is the cucu of the renowned Pilus (Pilus was a common name on our tongues back in high school, maklumlah zaman-zaman ejek atuk orang)--will turn 21, tak kiralah September 20, 21 or 22. Dan pokoknya, he deserves to be remembered.

Happy 21st Birthday, Kimbu! You're no longer a juvie, sila buat baik. Seribu maaf dipinta if aku tersalah bahasa, musim-musim Aidilfitri ni we must forgive and forget, weh. Minal Aidil Wal Faizin. I lap you, you lap me (though I am still counting on you to discard that obscene, obscene picture of me on stage as Muna)! Sekian, salam sayang jangan lupa potong rambut every 6 months from me.

Salam Merantau

The roads to Jalan TAR are bottlenecked with cars transporting people young and old, male and female alike, who are there to shop till the cows come home. For the adventure-seeking, hot-blooded individual (like yours truly here), public transportation is the best alternative turned worst nightmare as it takes you traipsing along the trails of sin and spending from Masjid Jamek all the way to what was then called Batu Road.

I took to the wild city of Kuala Lumpur, scorching sun, impending rain and all, with the sole goal of claiming my grandmother's baju kurung from the tailor. The tailor was located rather unstrategically--right smack and center of the Hari Raya bazaar, close to Semua House. Naturally, I came back with no less than four plastic bags and a dwindling supply of the advanced duit raya I received from two aunts.

I emerged triumphant with the cutest slip-on tudung I'll probably only wear once, a striking green and fair imitation of the Rayban shades I cannot quite afford, three boxes of Pop-Pop (bought becaused I pitied the man, what else is new?) and another I<3KL t-shirt as a souvenir for whom?-I-haven't-quite-figured-out-yet.

So yes, I know it is the time of the year again as I bring my petite self across oceans of bodies that displayed a plethora of smells (BO being my least favorite). Raya songs were blaring on loudspeakers in the background while mountains of kuih raya were displayed under stuffy tents.

I wasn't fasting yesterday (for obvious and allowed reasons by virtue of being a female), so the feel of Raya did not really hit me until I was in the safe--not to mention cold--premise of the STAR to Masjid Jamek and PUTRA to Sentral (I took the transfers because 1.it was raining cats and dogs, 2. I was flat broke and couldn't deal backtracking on the bloody path of consumerism).

It is Hari Raya Puasa is Aidilfitri is Eid Fitri of the year 2009! It's also my third Raya as a college student without a Salam Perantauan in tow. This in mind, Salam Merantau is born.

Walaupun kita jarang bersua, saya tetap sayangkan anda semua!

Last but not least, Selamat Hari Raya to you readers, random or not, followers or not, friends or not, and thank you. Yet another Ramadan has come and gone, and I pray that you're blessed with hope and happiness, health and faith and all good things that leave you warm and fuzzy.

Selamat!

An "Inside Joke" Is Never Funny "Outside"

PJ, 11 September--NJ picks up the office phone authoritatively, putting on her no-nonsense, most professional voice. She dials for Richard Ng, with much gusto and style, punching the numbers as she reads it aloud.

Richard Ng is one man, one Malaysian man, who operates a cab. His business card reads: "Taxi service, from your doorstep to any step away; KLIA, Inter-city, Intra-city; Please call at least an hour before your trip."

NJ: Hello, Mr. Richard ah? I'm calling from Amnesty International in PJ.

R: Yes yes. What? NST what?

NJ: Oh, no no. Amnesty International, from New Town PJ.

R: Uhuhuh.

NJ: Anyways ah, I'd just like to ask you if we can reserve your cab for 2pm today? From 8 Avenue here at New Town PJ ah, Section 8, to Central Market. Well, actually not really Central Market lah, but Annexe. You know ah?

R: How you got my number?

NJ: Oh, I have your business card, a staff took your cab once. You said to call in advance, maa.

R: Ya ya. (Silent for 2 seconds) Oh, I ah, no longer do cab business ah.

NJ: Oooooh. (Silent for 4 seconds) Okay, nemind. Thank you ah Mr. Richard Ng. You have a nice day.

NJ to others in the office: Oh, Mr. Richard Ng has moved on to better things in life. He no longer does cabs.

(Office errupts in laughter)

The Rise and Fall Fall Fall

It's eerily peculiar that we say we are 'into someone' when frankly human beings can only go 'into' cars, houses and coffins. The transcend into the 'falling' phase is another mistreatment of language, in the most literal sense. 'Falling' in love--a wistful catch-phrase that gets the better of most people who don't know any better.

But time and time again, you hear whispers of the truth, lying beneath stories and layers of histories of familiar faces, of hearts you care about, of lessons learned yourself. Your body tremors with laughter insulated with shame for you see it now--it is called 'falling' for accurate reasons.

It is, half the time, not by virtue of circumstance, space and time, but by failing to watch your step. That is how you 'fall', even 'falling' in love. Failing to find requited love upon 'falling', you end up at the darkest, deepest trench on earth--your aching heart.

Unmistakably, when the zenith of heavens are reached, and all goes well, you 'fall', too. You 'fall' into a rhythm so new yet so familiar, like it was set in stone, as are the moon, sun and stars veiling the universe.

I 'fell' in love with Colbie Caillat's Falling For You, and hard, too. But this is one of those "falling-s" that I can pick myself up from, though, thank you.

p/s: My 9.09pm of 09/09/09 was spent in no better way than I could imagine. I had my regular girl on her special day sans the regular guys, but it was worth every minute lying on the pavement waiting to capture a snapshot of the digital clock turning 9.09pm at the Maxis tower. Oops, yes, we missed Tarawikh. Apa pandang-pandang, haa? JK. Okay, roger and out.

Because I Don't Want To Forget

"There must be an answer for everything, if only you knew how to set forth the questions."-233

"Some lived careful lives and some lived careless lives, and everything that happened could be explained by the difference between them."-254

"A person who'd been moved around a great deal never acquired a fixed point of reference but wandered forever in a fog--adrift upon the planet, helpless, praying that just by luck he might stumble across his destiny."-115
Those feeling lost and are in the losing, pick up The Accidental Tourist by Anne Tyler. Nothing like curling into a good book once you feel like you're losing the groove. Drug yourself with some Alice Hoffman magic too, while you're at it. A sure cure for those going back to school blues. I feel thankful ma thrust-ed these books under my nose. Now, if only I can permeate through this writer's block; have but one article and an intern testimony to fuss about. Sigh.

Saya Pelatih Melapor Diri Pada Tahun 2011

At times it pays to have a brother who's bengkeng. After he has so kindly (to me) and unkindly (to them) chided the PLKN officers who screwed up my 4-year deferment, the verdict is out.

It's now 2 years before I have to lug my then 22-year-old (and hopefully NOT pudgy) unfit self to bootcamp.

Why? Because Bank Negara has spoken, and thy files are marked and stamped. There is no escape. But wait there is; to defer until I'm old and thirty OR get married and have kids, whichever comes first (preferably the latter). Ok, just kidding. I'll do it, you bet I will.

Pant through an obstacle course like I did throughout my 5 years of boarding school, use "hardwater" and get pimples like I always had in camps, march under the scorching sun and grant myself a tan like the one I have lived with for so many years? For Yahoo! fun as such, who can complain? Wait, then there is the privilege of donning those blue heavy uniforms and running around in those UGG-ly boots? Ah, sheer pleasure.

Oh, so you noticed the sarcasm? No, no, really, learning how to handle a gun and actually do some community service may be the only two things I'll value from PLKN. With the first, I am armed with the security, confidence and physical knowledge that I can blow off the dick of the next dickhead who breaks my heart; and the second, for obvious reasons.

Sure, this is going to be legen-wait for it-dary! Wait, no, really, I'm dead serious about the gun, no the community service. Eh, no, the community service, yes, yes.

And no, I am not usually this gedik, if that's what you're wondering. I just hate this serving-PLKN-before-I-work business with a passion.

Little Miss Butterfingers?

Sila gelakkan saya. I did the unthinkable and deleted my Recycle Bin last night. "Mana boleh delete recycle bin", you say? Cuba try test right-click on that Recycle Bin icon (for PC users) and select "Delete". There you go, you've just deleted your Recycle Bin. Congratulations for screwing up, and let's all join my club!

Some would argue that you can never "delete" your Recycle Bin per say (Thank God for that), but you know, when that familiar icon is gone, and you get that racing heartbeat like all the times you know you fumbled, you call the cards for what it is: your recycle bin has disappeared! Oh no-s!

But Google lives for dunce people like moi. In fact, I should think Google was invented for people who thrives at fumbling like ol' bumbling me! Mr. Goo linked me to Mr. Pedia, who had all the answers when Yahoo!Answers and other random forum sites where inaccessible (Read: Server Not Found and Page Cannot Be Loaded).

The scoop is right about Recycle Bins being un-delete-able. It just gets hidden. Silly people like me who use Windows Vista (not that we're silly for using Vista, but rather, we are silly AND we use Vista as our OS), heed these beautiful words:
If the Recycle Bin icon has been deleted from the desktop screen, the following actions can restore it (in Windows Vista ) - clicking: Right click->Personalization->and then click "change desktop icons" from the left-hand column at the top. From there just check Recycle Bin and click OK. If it doesn't appear on the desktop, restart computer.--Wikipedia
Problem is solved, and you are one step closer to becoming a full-fledged IT geek. Awesome possum, innit?

Jason Mr-AZ Should Teach Me Some A-Z

It's been 4 weeks that I'm left without prose, leaving this blog abandoned without a single decent topic to talk about. Or rather, I have been formulating entries in incomplete circles, for I come up with something to talk about and lose interest in the middle (to use someone's phrase, ha ha), all in my head.

But sometimes when you're left wordless, you tend to see things in a different light. You see that with or without words, we're doomed. Sometimes what is unsaid hurts more than what is uttered. A person who leaves you hanging gives you more shit than a person who fucks up your life with cruel words, am I not right?

Talentime, one of the many testimonies to Yasmin Ahmad's brilliance in film-making portrays the truth about the power of words, or rather the power without words. Mahesh, a lad who's speech and hearing impaired (and who, I must say, is extremely hot that he makes me salivate the whole 2 hours in front of the TGV screen) punches me with the staunch truth that sometimes we speak too much and fail to listen to what the universe has to tell us.

Alas, living in a world without words and speech can be devastatingly difficult. Emotions are wrongly read, especially with those who are EQ-ly unsound, and messages are lost, in the middle. Anyone who's ever been to a team-building seminar or whatever kind of workshop would know what I'm talking about if they've played "Chinese Whispers" or some game that requires non-verbal communication or blindfolds and all that jazz.

What would a sigh be if one is voiceless? There is no signal for "eh" or it's English counterpart "you know". Tell me what kind of gestures would substitute our playful "tsk tsk"s? Writing, you say? Of course, to write, solves one problem.

But then again, when both written and spoken words fail me, I do it with pictures. 4 weeks of joy, sadness, camaraderie, learning, love, growing, realizations and absence, all rolled into 5 collages. Maybe then you'll understand there is so much to talk about, but too little is the capacity in me to cough it all up. Pictures, pictures would keep you company for the time being.

p/s: Here's a thought--Instead of just exclaiming "Happy 52nd Merdeka" on Facebook and tweet about the stupidity of the newly-coined Salam 1 Malaysia, next time let's take a ride down Merdeka lane, trace some old national landmarks and teach your kids some stories they'd want to keep for their kids.

The Masterplan

I will come full-frontal and tell you this: I make lists for everything. Well, at least I try to. Grocery lists, to-do lists, shopping lists, bill breakdowns; those are a must. About a month after my return to the blogging arena, I came up with a list of things I wanted talk about. I even coined cool (or so I think) titles to complement them, none of which ever came about.

A list of "Songs To Be Downloaded/Copied" also remains on my widget notepad to this day. My most recent endeavor was to prepare a list of books I wanted to read for my 3-month break from college and you know this is not happening because I promised myself to only buy used books online. A list of "Books To Be Bought On Amazon" would soon be drafted and--I'm almost certain--left untouched.

The irony is that I made a "Things I Would Never Do, Just Because" list that I seem to be checking off (or unchecking-off, depending on how you choose to perceive it) one-by-one. For your reference, the list:
  1. Do anything to my hair (including perm, but especially color). CHECK (By perming).
  2. Smoke (shisha or hookah not an exception). CHECK (Twice, on hookah).
  3. Have more than one piercing. CHECK (Ear cartilage piercing, birthday treat to myself from myself)
  4. Swim in a swimming pool with clothes (I believe in swimsuits for swimming pools). CHECK (I was doing well until yesterday, goddamit).
  5. Vomit (self-induced or not).
  6. Go on a diet.
  7. Take painkillers.
To digress a little, yes, I have never puked in my 20 years of life. To go through life without puking is my aspiration, and we will have to wait 10 years down the road to see if morning sickness gets the best of me (I do plan to have kids, you know?). And god forbid I should ever have to go on a diet or take painkillers.

So there is a conundrum. I am itching to make a list, a list of "Adventurous Endeavors I Shall Partake In".

Before I die and utter the Kalimah Syahadah (InsyaAllah), I may want to go sky diving with a colorful parachute; take a jumping snapshot on the Y of the "Hollywood" at Hollywood; camwhore on a hot air balloon; drive a mini lorry; try bungee jumping, walk backwards on the Taman Negara Pahang suspension bridge; go skinny dipping (but wear a lifejacket since I'm afraid of deep waters) with my husband somewhere in the Caribbeans.

But once they are set in stone, written in black and white, typed on a screen, whatever it may be, I will not be able to attain them, won't I? Shall I make a non-list; a list that finds form in my thoughts and dreams, only to be coughed out once realized? For starters, here's one:
  1. Rock-climbing. CHECK (Thanks to climbing enthusiast, Zyra. And to the Almighty that I am still in one piece despite my angst and "Takde tenagalah" screams on the way up)
  2. Get dumped into the sea 6 times (no, 7, if you count the time when my wonderful friends leaned backwards, making us all vulnerable to the big, open Port Dickson sea) from a banana boat. CHECK (with a bruised left cheek and aching limbs to account for it)
  3. Ride backwards on a banana boat and get dumped into the sea. CHECK (activity was carried out with screams that pierced the blue sky, most definitely).
  4. Flying fox, abseiling, repelling. CHECK (achieved throughout my 10 years of schooling, but hope to be checked twice).
  5. Bathe stark naked in the dark, with friends AND random acquaintances of the same gender, from a suspicious looking kolah. CHECK (Kem Terendak, Melaka was all military style; need I say more?)
  6. Walk around naked in a dormitory bathroom. CHECK (I was after all, a victim of a friend's towel-hiding scheme).
  7. Leave my brassiere (the common term sounds, well, too common) in a male friend's car and be forever scarred and humiliated. Sigh, CHECK.
Keep the adventures and misadventures coming, buddies! I have but one life to live and we all know that life's row boat should go merrily up the stream. "Bare" with me here, ha ha.

Singing In The Shower

Sometimes it's as simple as sharing a cake in the car, this pursuit of happiness. Other times it's singing in the cold shower after a sweaty, manic Monday or finding yourself lost in tangles of dreams as you pore over pages of a good book. Some prefer the intangible feeling of remembering the tune to a song they were struggling to recall. I wish it was all that AND finding the missing piece to the puzzle that is me.

Sediakan Payung Sebelum Hujan

What do you do when you finally get to meet someone you've always wanted to meet?

This person is the present day Batman, who so mysteriously appears and disappears from your life, and of those times, mostly during the night. You may want to personify him like the Chipsmore, "sekejap ada, sekejap takde". But when the other is there, you share stories--some intimate, some serious, others silly, and most, random.

And so, you've counted months and weeks to match this persona you think you know, and the voice and laugh you definitely recognize to a person you've never physically met. Again, what do you do when this reverie decides to come true?

Do you conjure up a list of 1001 topics to talk about? Do you talk like you know each other or do you just act cordial and slightly formal? Do you lean on old jokes you've cracked, or do you rely on new ones you've just learned? Do you ask the person if "he saves the best for the last, or eat everything all at once" like you've always wanted to ask?

I chose to fire him a raging spitball instead. Which, by the way, landed peacefully on his left forearm.

"So, how is MY summer so far"?

I raise the white flag. Nobody can be as geeky, and un-cool as me, raging spitball and all. And all summer long I'll keep that in mind.
